classes offered

Studio 2 offers on-going classes in Drawing and Color. They are two-hour classes in recurring six-week sessions, normally from 6-8 p.m. Occasionally classes are scheduled in mornings or afternoons. All needed materials are provided through the payment of a materials fee.

Drawing is conducted as two separate classes, both based on the assumption that everyone can draw if they allow themselves to relax and learn an approach that works for them. Usually, this involves experimenting with different ways of "looking," screening out many of the distractions of daily life, and shifting into alternative problem-solving techniques. It includes both left- and right-brain skills that research and experience have proven to be successful.

Color classes are individualized based on the needs and experience of students within a given class. Beginners are encouraged to experiment with color theory and become familiar with types of brushwork and approaches to painting. Materials typically used include, but are not necessarily limited to, tempera paint, acrylics, oil paint, chalk and oil pastels, assorted color pencils, and watercolors. Students are encouraged to experiment with a variety of media and subject matter, so some develop a wide repertoire of skills while others choose to focus intently on a specialty area.

Additional services and opportunities include:

Art History classes are lecture, discussion and inquiry forums that delve into the art produced across time. Assorted topics have included the elements and principles of art applied to the "Old Masters," period concentrations such as Impressionism or the art of Greece and Rome, public sculpture, and the repetition of a particular motif across different cultures and styles.

Open Studio Saturdays are offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at least once every eight weeks. This allows current or former students to come to work on projects of their own choosing (for free) in the company of other artists. Space is limited, so get here early!

Something To Do on Saturday workshops are in the planning stage. Periodically, one- or two-day workshops will be offered dealing with learning a specific process or technique, material or media, or serving a target audience. I will assemble needed equipment and materials and provide instruction, guidance, and encouragement. You can learn a new skill and do an individual project. Cost will be based on session length and the cost of needed materials.

Topics under consideration are listed below:

Grandparent/grandchild day — a shared opportunity to learn and make art. Team up and make a corn shuck doll, books, pottery, paintings, or collage together! Class lengths and specific projects will be decided based upon age-appropriate activities and client interests.

Hand-built pottery — basic coil construction technique using clay. Two sessions will provide the opportunity to build, fire, and glaze a functional piece of pottery.

Fancy floor cloths — sturdy canvas adorned with acrylics. A six-hour session will provide an opportunity to choose one of a variety of surface decoration techniques, including some non-traditional approaches, to create beautiful individualized floor cloths.

Handmade books — personalized book that you can judge by its cover! Make a journal, album, or sketchbook that is as beautiful on the outside as the private thoughts, poems, sketches, or photos you later decide to include within. You will have a six-hour session to design and construct your own book(s).

Christmas cards — unique and personal greetings for 2005! A six-hour session will be used to design and print your own holiday cards (or all-purpose greeting cards) using simple block printing techniques.

Loomless weaving — learn to design and execute a simple weaving technique. In this six-hour session, you will make a small woven project, typically a pouch, purse, or eyeglass case.

Coiled basketry — a simple yet versatile method to construct baskets from rope and yarn.

Symbolic self-portraits — creative mixed-media approach to defining yourself through art. There will be two three-hour sessions involving sculptural techniques, idea generation, project planning, and completion through collage techniques.
